Starting with the basics and referencing examples, we will discuss value, big shapes, composition, color harmony, and variations of edges, patterns and brushstrokes. Participants will then start with quick sketches with the intent of interpreting a scene rather than copying it. Students will choose from these quick sketches and plan quick sketches in oil before moving to a more controlled painting. Our goal is to make unique paintings by painting loosely, after planning. We will spend the first half of the class on exercises and discussion and the remaining time to start a painting from our own sources (photos or still life observations). On the second day we will review and discuss as needed and continue with individual paintings. The goal is to work on simple compositions which emphasize atmosphere rather than detail, using imagination and resource material.
