Description

Rug Hooking: Fine Shading Workshop - Make a Rose Chair Pad with Lynn Marquedant
POSTPONED! Dates: Wednesdays, February 11, 18, 25, March 4
Time: 1:00PM - 3:00PM
Location: Art Barn Drawing Studio
Fee: $220 for 4 week course, includes materials to make a chair pad (wool and linen backing with pattern).

Fine shading has to do with the use of many closely related colors, from a very pale value to a dark, of the same hue. Using different values, a rug hooking artist is able to create the appearance of shadows and shading that makes things look three-dimensional. In this class you will learn how to do fine shading with wool to create a heirloom rose and leaf-themed chair pad.  You will color plan and learn how to use value-based wool swatches in #3 and #4 cuts.  You will borrow drawing principles, identifying direction of the light source, hooking light to dark, and following form and contour of objects to create semi-realistic flowers. Throughout the 4-week class, you will see examples of floral rugs (in-person and pictures, new and old), seeing how shading techniques have evolved from the 1950’s McGowan era to more modern floral depictions of Karen Kahle and Sharon Smith. The goal is to whet your appetite for hooking flowers.

Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of rug hooking is required; Bring your own hook and frame. Featherstone has a Townsend cutter for students to use.

Materials kits provided include rose pattern drawn on foundation, hand-dyed wool, and rug binding to complete your chair pad.

Lynn Marquedant will be instructing this workshop with assistance from other Island Hookers. Island Hookers is a group of local rug hookers passionate about their craft! They hope to spread interest in rug hooking and are donating their time to teach workshops and oversee open studios.
